Several men and women have thought for many years that softwares would stroll beside people 1 morning. No 1 would have guessed that morning would come so soon. Students in the University of Essex in England have designed a robot fish modeled right after a carp. The design is equipped with chemical sensors to detect pollution and an internal monitoring method to assist it navigate and prevent collision with naval vessels and other obstacles. These robotic fish could also be equipped with video surveillance and sonar to assist assist with deep sea exploration in places human beings cannot go. Cars can be programmed to turn out to be effective automations for risk-free automatic transportation, which could considerably decrease vehicular deaths.

What would you use sauna heaters for? Sauna heaters are great for relaxing muscles and joints. Many people use them to rid the body of toxins. Some use it for an overall body and mind therapy. This was one way the sauna was used in an animated series King of the Hill.

On the program a new age native American has a sauna set up where he charges people to enter the sauna and allow the steam to release the toxins from the body and the mind. As the men are in the sauna sweating they all start having dreams or even hallucinations.

One man sees how he thinks he is going to die, riding a motorcycle through a giant donut. The steam has shown him his weakness for food will be his end. The sauna steam show one man, a pest exterminator, dying at the hands of a large insect. The other man is simply at peace at his job in his hallucination selling propane grills.

His mind is clear and there are no toxins to drive out by the steam and heat. The old man in the sauna heaters is a World War II vet who killed many enemies in the war. His guilt comes back to haunt him as he sweats in the sauna. He sees the men he killed in the war as he hallucinates. He runs out of the sauna blaming his son, the propane grill salesman, for taking him into the sauna.

You have to admit that proposing the wood stove as a mainstream heating technology for the 21st Century hardly seems credible, but follow along and discover why this blast from the past has a rosy future ahead of it.

The original design of the wood stove dates back to the mid 18th Century and a certain Benjamin Franklin, who lived in the new and rapidly growing city of Philadelphia. The rate of development was such that there was soon a severe shortfall in firewood supplies which prompted him to invent a device he named the circulating stove.

This new stove was orders of magnitude more efficient than a conventional open fire, which meant quite simply that a lesser amount of wood was needed which in turn significantly eased the extra demand for this finite resource. The first design was soon improved with a front door, to seal and even better regulate the airflow, and it remained essentially unchanged for the next two hundred or so years.

By the time the 1970s rolled around, a familiar story resurfaced; the oil crises of that time limited the supply of oil which in turn impacted the many people who by this time relied on gas and oil to operate their heating systems. Many quite sensibly started to reconsider wood burners given the readily available and thus more affordable supply of fuel.

There’s a pretty good argument to be made that the ills of the world are due to modern technology. The combustion engine, electric lighting, powered flight, mass produced products. These and many other such things have all resulted in depleting natural resources and causing pollution quite literally on an industrial scale.

When it comes to the fuel that powers these modern technologies there is an even more depressing legacy. Our energy source of choice is the burning of fossil fuel, in other words oil, coal and gas. However there is now rather less fuel left than has already been burned and what has already been burned has raised levels of atmospheric CO2 to record levels. We’re caught on the horns of a twin dilemma.

The party’s over – the bottle (or barrel) is all but empty and a toxic hangover and a vague recollection of reckless merriment are all that await. The last ironic gasp of this bygone age of technology might yet be a global pandemic of some new disease or virus, spread around the world in just days or weeks thanks to widespread access to easy travel.

But is this really how our world ends? And is technology really the evil root of it all? Well probably not. This won’t be the first time that humanity has had to face up to the painful consequences of some pretty dumb (in hindsight) behaviour. Yet we’re still here.
